Izzy Lindqwister – Pyjama Party

traduzione a cura di Cais das Palavras

Ever since my own personal discovery of ABBA (for better or worse), I’ve tried to keep up with the changing musical sounds that regularly come out of Sweden. Although I’d be hard pressed to explain the reason myself, I’ve always found plenty of forage on those freezing Nordic pastures (especially heavy metal): Opeth, Marduk, Candlemass, Katatonia, In Flames, and Hammerfall … I’ve also developed a taste for Europe, The Ark, Cardigans, and Mando Diao, I’m not ashamed to say. They’ve got some real guitar slingers up there, no doubt about it.
So I’m understandably content to spend a few words on Pyjama Party, the first solo shot from former Rodeo Massacre frontwoman, Izzy Lindqwister, one of the most electrifying voices I’ve heard in this lukewarm first decade of the Third Millennium.
Without disappointing anyone out there, Rodeo Massacre fans expecting to hear Jefferson Airplane psychedelics might think they’ve come to the wrong place.
Pyjama Party is an EP that manages to surprise at every turn and track: the influences of different styles perceptible in the five offerings are too many to number, and range from jazz to ska, from the dreamy atmosphere of a fin de siècle French boudoir to rock ‘n roll drenched blues and soul … There’s just so much to absorb in so few minutes!
Has she perhaps put too much meat on the grill?
«Strip down soul, we’ve gotta’ change and rearrange», she reminds us.
In the end, perhaps, losing yourself has never appeared so enchanting.
